Usage notes
- Hundred, thousand, million, billion, etc, may be preceded by one (and their corresponding ordinals by one-) except when preceded by an article.
- Examples: one thousand, one-thousandth, a thousand, a thousandth, the thousand, the thousandth but not a one thousand, a one-thousandth, the one thousand, the one-thousandth
- When spoken or written in words, the years from 1000 to 1999 are reckoned in hundreds. The word hundred was formerly included; nowadays it is considered archaic and seen only in legal contexts.
- Examples: ten sixty-six (1066); nineteen ninety-nine, nineteen-hundred ninety-nine or nineteen-hundred and ninety-nine (1999) (see note 3)
- In UK English, in cardinal and ordinal numbers greater than 99 that end with a numeral from one to ninety-nine, the word and is put in front of the final numeral. In numbers over 100,999, this rule applies to each block of three numbers separated by commas.
- Examples: one hundred and one (101); a thousand and ninety-nine (1099); two million, four hundred and twelve thousand, three hundred and eight (2,412,308)
- In the US, the numbers billion, trillion, etc, refer the ninth, twelfth, etc, powers of 10. In the UK, and formerly in the US, they used to refer to the twelfth, eighteenth, etc, powers, but the US system is now more common. Usage varies in other countries (see billion for more information).
