Madras



Etymology

Etymology uncertain; older forms are Madraspatan, Madraspatanam, and Madraspattinam, the latter ingredient being from Sanskrit पत्तन (pattana) 'village, city'. It is possible that Madras is from Arabic مدرسة (madrasah) 'college'.

Proper noun

  1. Former name of Chennai, the state capital of Tamil Nadu (India).
  2. British a style of curry dish purported to originate from Madras region.
    • "I'll have the Chicken Madras."
