etymology

low is a translation of the german and low saxon word "platt" in "Plattdeutsch" and "nieder" in "Niederdeutsch". Saxon derives from the tribe of the saxon (compare to anglo saxons), who lived and live in northern germany and later also in england. Saxon means ax bearer.

adjective and noun

  1. language of the northern germany, eastern netherlands and parts of denmark. Low saxon is spoken also in parts of northern and southern america. Sister language to english, german, frisian and dutch, but with some connections to the scandinavian languages.
