  1. demonstrative pronoun, neuter referring to a thing, farther away: that (cp. dit, and deze/die).
  2. demonstrative adjective, referring to a thing: that, which.

Usage note: a preceding comma may alter the meaning of a clause starting with a demonstrative adjective.

Het boek, dat wit was, gaf ik terug vs. Het boek dat wit was, gaf ik terug: the book, which was white, by the way, I returned, vs. the white book I returned.

  1. Wat is dat?: what is that?
  2. Ik zag dat het goed was: I saw that it was well
