Etymology

from the Latin Canaria insula, Canary island (Islas Canarias); named for its dogs (canis).

  1. a small, usually yellow, finch, a songbird native to the Canary Islands (Serinus canaria, Serinus serinus, Serinus pusillus).
  2. a light, slightly greenish, yellow colour.
  3. a light, sweet, white wine from the Canary Islands
  4. a lively dance, possibly of Spanish origin (also called canaries)
  5. colloquial: a female singer, soprano, a coloratura singer.
  6. any of various small birds of different countries, most of which are largely yellow in colour
  7. slang: an informer or snitch, squealer (someone who "sings" to the police)
